Hard work and determination has paid off for Collie TAFE student Sharla Birch, who has been awarded the Collie Campus Student of the Year Award for her studies in Education Support.
Ms Birch said she was honoured to receive the award after competing her Certificate III in Education Support.
“I was excited and overwhelmed, it’s really an honour, I didn’t expect it,” she said.
The mother of two, who originally completed her high school education at Collie Senior High School, is back at the school after securing part-time work there. Ms Birch thanked her lecturers and the support she had received from the TAFE.
Early Childhood and Education Support Lecturer Sharon Fimmano said Ms Birch was a stand-out student.
“Every so often a student stands out and just shines, above and beyond what other students do, and Sharla is one of those students,” she said.
“Her level of understanding and knowledge and her application of that in the workplace is outstanding, so that’s why she got the prize.”
Collie Campus Manager Jacqueline Elizabeth said several students from the Collie campus had been nominated for the award.
“We have got some really wonderful students who come through here, they are determined and motivated and it’s quite rewarding what comes out,” she said.
South Regional TAFE Managing Director Duncan Anderson congratulated those receiving recognition.
“The students receiving awards this evening have demonstrated drive, determination and application,” he said.
