A guard at Darwin's Don Dale Youth Detention Centre stood watch while another officer tried to cover up a CCTV camera with lavatory paper as they physically dealt with Dylan Voller???, the detainee whose image has became the symbolic image of Northern Territory juvenile justice system.
The guards entered Mr Voller's cell and video footage presented to the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the NT showed one of them standing over the inmate.
Mr Voller alleged former guard Ben Kelleher had threatened to kill him and break his arm.
New Zealand-born Mr Kelleher, now a 188-centimetre tall, 96 kilogram boxer, and one of eight Don Dale youth justice officers who were devotees of martial arts and cage-fighting, told the commission he had become angry and entered the cell after Mr Voller had made threats against his family.
Mr Kelleher denied trying to obscure the camera or that he threatened Mr Voller as portrayed in the August 16, 2014 footage.
"I yelled at him, and I don't regret what I said because I didn't make any threats, I told him I didn't want to work with him any more, I told him to pull his f---ing head in ??? but I didn't make any threats," he said.
He said he swore at Mr Voller to show he was serious: "Dylan's vocabulary didn't extend much past that."
Earlier on Wednesday, the other guard, Conan Zamolo,??? admitted he lied previously about why the men had entered the cell.
"I realise now how inappropriate it was not to tell the truth at the first instance, and I have since suffered the consequences of that, including losing my job," Mr Zamolo said in the statement.
But during cross-examination, Mr Voller's lawyer Peter O'Brien??? asked if the CCTV camera had been blocked his client would have been in very serious trouble.
Mr Zamolo: "No, he wouldn't have."
Mr O'Brien: "You knew it then and you know it now."
"You're just putting words in my mouth."
"What you were witness to there was a man's desperate attempt to inflict violence on a child."
"Absolute rubbish."
Mr Zamolo also rejected several allegations that he had flicked snot into an inmate's mouth and dared Mr Voller to drink a litre of milk laced with salt.
Royal commissioners were shown Snapchat videos published by Mr Zamolo - he said with permission of detainees - that included footage of him encouraging a detainee to eat bird faeces and shouting at a boy shown hiding under a sheet: "Come suck my dick you little c---."
"I regret doing it now," Mr Zamolo told commissioners. "Looking back, I got a bit too complacent and casual ??? in attempts to help the detainees to have a few moments of fun during their time in detention."
Former Don Dale assistant general manager, James Sizeland???, a former boxer, rejected suggestions that there was a policy to recruit fighters to guard Don Dale teenagers.
