Shire of Collie looking for public feedback for Collie Museum re-opening

The Collie Museum is to re-open on Saturday, July 1.

Collie Shire Council has set up a new advisory committee charged with responsibility for re-opening the museum.

Shire president Wayne Sanford said shire staff, councillors and volunteers had been working towards the re-opening for some time.

“The new Museum Advisory Committee has come up with a plan for works to be undertaken over the next couple of months,” said Cr Sanford.

He said the committee, which comprises two councillors, two council staff and five community members, will run the museum for at least the next two years with a view to eventually handing it over to a purpose formed incorporated body.

Councillors Joe Italiano (chairman) and John Piavanini are joined on the committee by shire staff members Allison Fergie and Alison Kidman and community members Alan Wade, Kevin Massara, Mark Paget, Susan Lee and Tom Reardon.

Mr Reardon has been appointed works coordinator and is currently working through a plan to ensure the museum is ready for re-opening on July 1.

Shire staff have already addressed many of the issues raised in the 2011 audit, making it safe for the re-opening.

“Mr Reardon will be at the Collie Public Library from Monday of next week undertaking various works,” said Cr Italiano.

“He is keen to hear from anyone who would like to help prepare for the re-opening.”

“Many people have already indicated their support for the museum and now is the time for them to come forward and help us with the myriad of jobs which need doing.”

Cr Italiano said that advertising was underway for a person to manage the museum.

“This is a paid position and the successful applicant will, among other duties, be responsible for the day to day opening of the museum and the rostering of volunteers,” added Cr Italiano.

“However, there are still a lot of things that we would like to do, so anyone who has time and energy should call in to the library next week to register their interest.”

Anyone unable to call into the library next week but who would like to get involved with the museum can contact Cr Italiano on 0419 926 297.
