Progress at one of Collie’s sporting attractions has shifted up a gear thanks to a donation from mining giant Premier Coal.
The mining company has supplied 70,000 cubic metres of sand, filling 28 Olympic-size swimming pools, for Collie Motorplex’s $2.6 million track extension project.
The extension will make Collie Motorplex the longest track in the state, stretched from 1.6 kilometres out to 2.55km.
Collie Motorplex manager Anna Farrell appreciated Premier Coal’s grants funding efforts.
She said the project would elevate the facility’s role in the community and bring increased tourism through town.
Mrs Farrell said the motorplex will be able to hold more two-day events once the project has been completed.
Premier Coal general manager Bill McKinstrey said the company was pleased to continue its ongoing support of the facility.
Motoring South West chairman Terry Massara praised Premier Coal for the donation and assisting with the project.
Motoring South West and the Shire of Collie have managed the project, with funding put forward by the WA Government.
Shire of Collie chief executive officer David Blurton said they were looking out for more funding for additional works to be completed.
“There are a lot more improvements which could be undertaken at the Collie Motorplex facility,” he said.
“Improved pedestrian access has been planned which will enhance safety of spectators and resurfacing of the existing track, improvements to amenities and upgrades to the pit areas are some of the other improvements which have been identified.”
