The Collie RDA played host to riders from across the state as it held a ‘vaulting camp’ last week.
Riders from Moora and Augusta came to Collie to take part in the three day event which taught visitors the basics of vaulting, a sport that combines elements of gymnastics with horse riding.
Ripplebrook Equestrian Vaulting Academy coach Kay Fowler said the camp spent the first two days teaching the students the skills and techniques, before they performed their routines in front of a judging panel on the final day.
“Our focus for the whole two days was teamwork and what they could achieve if they worked together as a team,” she said.
Under the training of Victorian vaulter Ellen Vincent, the students learned the ‘compulsories’, the techniques competitors must do in singles competitions, before they choreographed a themed team routine.
Ms Fowler said she was impressed with how quickly the riders were able to pick up the techniques and skills required.
“In two days we covered what the art of vaulting is as a team and the results have been amazing,” she said.
“We hope that we can do this every year to promote the sport of vaulting in WA.”
Ms Fowler said the camp wouldn’t have been possible without the help of volunteers, which are vital to the RDA.
The RDA are currently looking for more volunteers to help keep the facility running smoothly.
