A recent waste audit showed the school and its students had reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill each day by 85 per cent.
Mr McGowan said St Brigid’s was setting an example for all schools to follow.
“It is fantastic to see students being so proactive in reducing their waste and ultimately their impact on the environment,” he said.
“Changing behaviours towards single-use waste and the ‘throwaway’ mentality begins at a young age and making changes in our primary schools is the best place to start.”
Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray said he was proud to show off the work of Collie students.
“St Brigid’s Primary is truly leading the way for waste reduction initiatives in the community,” he said.
“Waste reduction is something we should all pay much needed attention to and St Brigid’s Primary has done an outstanding job at reducing their environmental footprint.”
