A course equalling final round of 68 highlighted Greg Golinski's third Riverside Open victory at Collie Golf Club last Sunday.
In one of the most convincing victories on record, Golinski, posted 138 (70 and 68) to be a massive 20 shots better than his younger brother and defending champion, Michael, on 158 (76/82).
In third spot, a further three strokes back, was Kevin Burton, of Waroona, on 161 (81/80).
Golinski had back-to-back Riverside wins in 1999 and 2000.
One of the proudest people in the clubhouse on Sunday night was former local member and good club supporter Marek Golinski, who has now witnessed his offspring win four of the last 21 Riverside events.
The winner, who was prominent as a junior in Collie, equalled rounds of 68 achieved in February 1998 by Donnybrook's Len Korn and in March 2001 by Michael Dennis, of Capel.
Golinski went out in a blistering four under par 32 for the first nine on Sunday and had a chance to break the record with a makeable putt on the 18th. Unfortunately, the putt failed to drop.
Competitions
Saturday's opening round was won by Collie's David Blurton, who finished on 76, some six shots back from the eventual overall winner.
Blurton had 15 pars, two bogeys and a double bogey, on his card. It could have been a lot better had some of his many birdie putts dropped.
Tim Buller, of Darkan, was three shots behind Blurton, on 79.
Sunday's gross winner was the Sanctuary's Troy Forrester with 75 off-the-stick, three better than Collie's Danny Cheng on 78.
Local players again dominated the nett section with Fred Bronickis on 143 (73 and 70) prevailing ahead of Neil Motion 145 (79/66), David Laird 146 (76/70) and Colin Giblett 146 (75/71).
Swan Vale's Gary Jarrett won Saturday's nett, with a fine 69, one better than Jamie Pitchers who was runner-up on a countback.
Sunday's nett went to Jim Larsen who was two ahead of Clayton Flynn. They had scores of 69 and 71 respectively.
Colin Giblett recorded an eagle two on the par fourth sixth.
Novelties were of offer on both days. Saturday's nearest-the-pins were won by Michael Golinski (No. 4), Rob Lister (7) and Bruce Jackson (14). Longest putts went to Michael Golinski (5), Peter Ellery (9) and Ian Stewart (18).
Nearest the pins on Sunday were Bruce Jackson (No. 4), Steve Foreman (7) and Steven Ireland (14). Longest putts were sunk by Steve Foreman (5), Dean Rakich (9) and Joe Italiano (18).
FRIDAY'S 18-hole four-ball-best-ball par event was won by Joel Simmonds and Paul Moyses.
The winners combined well to have pluses on ten of the 18 holes, well clear of the second and third placed combinations of John Michalak-Neil Motion and Stephen Miller-Roger Hunter on plus seven. Also, on plus seven and edged out of the trophies on a countback were Jim Larsen and Tony Barker-May.
Other combinations to do well were - Warren Hann-Jamie Pitchers, Steve Gianola-Trevor Graham, Colin Naysmith-Wayne Waywood, Doug Crowe-Jim Hine +6; Jan Van Volenstee-Colin Giblett, Ash Hollins-David Broadbent, Steve Carnaby-Alan Perkins, Peter Ellery-Brian Banks, Joe Wnuk-Ian Edwards +5.
The Golinski brothers tuned up for the Riverside by posting the best gross score of all square.
Last Thursday's nine-hole scroungers event was won by veteran Frank Battista on a countback from Mark Malatesta.
They finished with 20 points to be one ahead of four players, on 19, and two ahead of two players on 18.
Those on 19 were Ron Annandale, Alan Kent, Wayne Waywood and Dean Rakich. On 18 were visitor Greg Guile and Jim Larsen.
Dean Rakich's 40 off-the-stick was the day's best gross, while novelties were won by John Michalak (No. 1), Brian Banks (4), Eric Annandale (6), Frank Battista (7) and Dave Henderson (9).
THE leisure day 18-hole stableford, played on Tuesday of last week, was a walk in the park for Steven Ireland. Ireland scored 39 points to be four points better than his nearest rival, Paul Moyses, on 35.
Tom Hardie, Ray Cooper and Frank Battista had 34, Roger Hunter and Joe Italiano 33, Jim Moyses and Ed Riley 32.
