The swimming pool season will start on Saturday, October 12. New opening hours this year are: Monday to Thursday, 6.30am to 7pm.
Friday and Saturday, 10am to 7pm. Sunday, 12pm to 7pm. Pool staff have taken delivery of new inflatable toys to add to the fun in the water. There is a fee for use of the inflatables.
Ladies golf clinic
Ladies interested in playing golf are invited to a free clinic at the Collie Golf Club, run by golf professional Shani Waugh.
This will be held this Sunday, October 13, at 3.30pm. All equipment is supplied, and light refreshments will be available after the clinic. Ring Bev on 0410 062 228 to register your interest.
Adventure race
It's another big weekend in Collie, with the Adventure Race events happening in and around Minninup Pool. This event always brings lots of people to town.
Collie people have a deserved reputation for being friendly and welcoming, so get your smiles ready for the visitors.
Not-so-friendly I had heard a few comments about not-so-friendly magpies on the Karak Trail, and I did warn my granddaughter who went for a bike ride along the trail.
Sadly, she was dive-bombed to the point where she gave up and turned back.
My daughter decided that none-the-less, she would go for a walk there as I had told her of the reports of wildflowers now in bloom.
She found the wildflowers, enjoyed them, photographed them, and then the magpie found her.
Luckily, it was on her way back to town.
It is sad to think that the bird has obviously felt the need to defend her chicks, so someone must have been not-so-friendly towards her.
Don't forget to vote
Have you filled in your Council ballot form yet? There is still a week or so to do so, but if you are like me when you receive something in the mail, it is easy to put things aside "for later".
If you intend returning your vote by mail, don't leave it too late to post it - but you can always take your ballot paper in to the Council office, including on the last day of the poll, Saturday, October 19.
Garden competition
Every year, the Garden competition judges pass lots of beautiful gardens which have not been entered for the Keeping Up Appearances Competition.
Entry forms are now available from the council office, the library and the two garden centres.
Entries close on October 18, so pick up your form, fill it in and return it to the council office. A new section this year will cover garden ornaments or furniture made from recycled material or re-purposed objects.
Garage sale
The Bowling Club's garage sale is on this Saturday, from 9am to 2pm. There will be heaps of goods, collectibles and books.
Children's Week
Collie library staff and Our Community Garden will join forces once again for a day out in the garden on Friday, October 18, from 10am to 2pm.
There will be story telling with Mrs Potts, an animal petting zoo, children can learn about growing their own food, and lots more activities.
This is a free event, and all are welcome. A light morning tea will be available.
Music at the Shell Music at the Shell for Liam will be held on Saturday, October 19, from 11.30am to 4pm.
There will be live music, popcorn, donuts, curry, sausages, slushies, a bouncy castle and face painting.
This is a community effort, and all proceeds will go to help Liam.
Lions Trash and Treasure
Collie Lions are holding a Trash and Treasure at the Old Ewington School on Saturday, November 8, and they are looking for donations of goods. This is a great chance to de-clutter in a burst of spring cleaning. If you can help, contact Greg Bates on 0498 481138.
He can pick up goods, or you can bring them to the Old Ewington School on Saturday, October 26th and Saturday, November 2 between 8am and 10am.
Collie floods
The video on the 1964 Collie floods is still showing at the Coalfields Museum, and help is still sought to identify people and places in the footage.
Attendance at the Museum soared during the school holidays, with many people taking advantage of the offer of free admission for children. This offer ends on Sunday.
