October 21 is D-Day for the Shire of Collie’s council election, with 12 locals vying for the chance to help create the town’s future.

The Shire currently has five vacancies for councillors on a four year term and one vacancy for a councillor on a two year term.
Shire president Wayne Sanford and vice president Glyn Yates have not nominated to stand for elections in 2017. Councillor Neil Martin’s position will also expire at the end of this term.
Local government ordinary elections are held every two years. Councillors are elected for terms of four years in WA.

Leonie Scoffern
Married with three children, I believe Collie is a great place to raise a family.
Since moving to the community almost 20 years ago and settling in Allanson, I’ve contributed to the community in many ways and hope to continue doing so from a seat on the Shire Council to better represent all members of the community at an important moment of the town’s history.
I formed the Black Diamond Action Group in 2015 to lobby the government for the rehabilitation and management of the area and have represented the community at a Senate Enquiry I helped to initiate on the Griffin Coal dispute and its effects on the region. Read more.

Coal, Power and Alumina Industry jobs are declining. Our children are leaving because there are no jobs. Where was the leadership over the last decade to prevent our town falling on hard times?
Instead of creating General Purpose Industrial land for business they were busy wasting resources on legal actions stopping the creation of jobs.

I am a long term resident of Collie having lived here for 35 years, married to Darryl who was raised in Collie– with three adult children – Jenna, Tyler and Shannen.
I have been a member of the school P and C and actively involved in sporting clubs over many years including playing, coaching and committee member.

Collie is entering an exciting and challenging phase as we seek a measured and stable transition from our dependence on the coal industry to a much broader, sustainable and self-sufficient economy.
A strong future in Collie depends on working collaboratively with key local and regional organisations and stakeholders as well as State and Federal government for mutually beneficial outcomes.

Kerry Roberts
Some Collie people may know that I grew up in Collie, and attended Collie’s primary schools and high schools.
I also started my working career in Collie. I have held positions within companies as CEO, Operations Director and General Manager, and throughout my career, I returned to Collie to work on the Bluewaters Power Station and Worsley Multi-Fuel Cogeneration plant.
I believe it is time the Council needs to be more proactive towards a better Collie and surrounding areas. Collie needs to try new things and foster employment opportunities, and industries. Read more.

I am Peter Hall and I am running for Collie Shire Council, I have lived in Collie for 15 years and come with a background in information technology.
I run a small business in Collie and have a vast experience in many fields including hospitality and service related Businesses.
I have a large combined family with seven children which most have been schooled locally, I believe in supporting local business, sports and charity groups and not for profit groups and I personally help out at Collie’s CoderDojo. Read more.

I have been actively involved in Collie as a community member of the following committees for several years: Chamber of Commerce Executive and as their representative on the Board of Motoring South West, Townscape committee, CBD committee, Collie River Valley Marketing Group, Collie Visitors Centre.

I married here with two daughters (16,21) and am a sibling of four. Family is most important to me.

Everybody knows leaders who fail to plan for the future, plan to fail. Local Government Act 1995 – Sect 5.56 says “(1) A local government is to plan for the future of the district”.
Everybody knows Collie has no General Purpose Industrial Land(GPI) and has had none for decades.
In early 2015, SAT, Senior Member Peter McNab in finding in favour of our businesses found that Collie had no GPI land.
Secret meetings have purported to approve hundreds of thousands of dollars of expenditure that you know nothing about. Read more.
